- About ff…
-
- If you’re running a RR Host/Second Sight BBS which supports network
- mail, ff (file forward) solves the problem of routing local and network
- private mail to addressees on a point network.
-
- ff is a Tabby event-compatible utility which reads a list of users and
- node numbers, then scans your messages, exporting locally entered
- private messages addressed to users on your list to network private
- messages with valid addresses. It also exports private net mail messages
- addressed to users contained in the listing to selected addresses. The
- list, which is called “ff List” (no quotes), is a text file in the
- following format (without the dashed and empty lines):
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ( List of addresses to be remapped. )
- ( Addresses are in this form: )
- ( FirstName <space> LastName <tab> NodeID <return> )
- ( Lines beginning with an open parenthesis are ignored. )
- ( All other lines should contain names and nodeIDs. )
- ( Use the local net ID, not a point: )
- ( 7500/1 rather than 102.823.1 )
- ( Node is written without Zone prefix: )
- ( 102/863 )
- ( *not* )
- ( 1:102/863 )
- ( )
- Bruce Gerson 7500/1
- The Bear 7500/1
- Mr. Sysop 7500/1
- John Alcock 7500/2
- Pete Johnson 102/863
- Greg Staie 102/942
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ff can manage up to 200 addresses. When it reads the file, it strips
- leading and trailing spaces from names by way of garbage elimination,
- and it validates the node number, which must consist only of numeric
- characters or the three characters / : . In comparing names, ff does
- not care about case: Bruce Gerson will match BRUCE GERSON.
-
- As it is shipped, ff should require no configuration on most systems. Its
- default settings are compatible with most Tabby setups.
-
- To install ff, copy it to the same level as TabbyNet. If you want to check
- or alter its settings, launch ff while holding down the mouse button. The
- resulting dialog allows you to reconfigure ff. Available options are
- Default Launch Name (normally Red Ryder Host or Second Sight) and switches
- for forwarding local private messages, net private messages or both. A
- “Find” button lets you alter Default Launch the field without any messy
- typing if you wish.
-
- To use ff, set up a valid ff List file at the same level as ff, then
- insert ff in your Tabby events list just before the message export
- utility (TExport or Export). This involves changing TabbyNet events with
- Tabby Maint and using ResEdit to modify TabbyNet (STR 305) and Tabby
- Robot (STR# 301).
-
- When it runs, ff scans quite quickly. You should find that it takes only a
- few seconds to do its work.

- Version History
-
- Versions prior to 1.1 used a file called EMSx.New to send messages to
- points. This file is recognized and translated by Copernicus, but it's
- not recognized by other point software. This obviously limited the use
- of ff to RRH/SS boards supporting only Copernicus points.
-
- 1.1 4/21/90 Creates proper mail packets which are compatible with all
- Fido point software.
-
- 1.2 5/5/90 Uses special flag to track messages entered as local
- private mail. Replies to these messages are returned to
- the local private mail section. The flag -- by default
- the two-character symbol ^P -- is added by ff to the
- end of the poster's name, if there is room. If not, it
- is added to the end of the Subject: line. The flag is
- stripped off when the message is returned to the local
- private section of the BBS -- your callers will never
- see it. This feature *requires* the use of TImport 1.9 or
- later for proper operation.
-
- 1.3 5/12/90 Can handle point addresses in ff list, as in:
-
- Pete Johnson <tab> 102/823.2 <cr>
-
- From another board, this would automatically route it to
- me at the right address. If you’re configuring the list
- for your own bard, use the private network ID; if it’s
- for a remote address, use the xxx/yyy.ppp address form.
-
- 1.4 6/16/90 No longer uses message numbers to keep its place. Instead,
- uses flag set by TExport to find messages which have not
- yet been processed. This simplifies setup and eliminates
- problems with utilities which renumber messages.
-
- 1.41 6/23/90 ff was truncating addresses by one character, causing much
- strangeness. Fixed.
-
- 1.42 12/8/90 Jesse Tharin pointed out that ff was oblivious to Tabby
- passwords. Thanks, Jesse.
-
- 1.43 12/28/90 Jesse Tharin found another password bug. Thanks again, Jesse.
-
- 1.45 1/26/91 Found and fixed a longstanding bug which garbled addresses on
- messages from points. Also eliminated double ff signature
- lines.
-
- 1.46 1/31/91 Removed option to not delete sent NetMail. Although this
- worked, ff would continually reprocess NetMail if the option
- was set. For a brief mad moment I had ff mark NetMail as
- processed regardless of delete setting, so it wouldn't
- repeatedly send out the same messages but this introduced
- another unpleasant side effect: ff might cause TExport to miss
- exporting some messages. Sigh. It's out. (This option was added
- with unreleased version 1.44 but never documented).
-
- 1.49 7/14/91 Fixed longstanding problem with ff finding its place in the
- MSGHDR file -- this accounted for occasional non-forwarded
- messages.
-
- 1.5 7/18/91 Fixed problem with origin node ID & added color icons.
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The latest version of ff can be obtained in two ways:
-
- 1> Send me a blank disk and a self-addressed stamped envelope and I'll
- send you a copy of the newest ff.
-
- 2> File request "ff" from either 102/863 or 128/46 with a password
- of "NewNew". In addition to that password, you'll need to use the
- password "ffPlus" to unstuff the file. (Note -- the quotes on the
- passwords are not part of the passwords.)
